SAFETY EQUIPMENT POLICY

1. Purpose

1.1 This Safety Equipment Policy (“Policy”) establishes the mandatory and recommended equipment requirements for all Participants engaging in tours, coaching sessions, races, skills programs, events, and related outdoor adventure activities (“Activities”) delivered by MTB Detour Pty Ltd (“the Operator”).

1.2 This Policy exists to ensure the safety, welfare, and readiness of Participants and to reduce risk associated with mountain biking in varying terrain, weather, and environmental conditions.

1.3 This Policy must be read together with the Terms of Participation and all other Operator Policies.

2. Scope

2.1 This Policy applies to:

(a) all Participants, including minors;

(b) all Guardians providing consent for minors;

(c) all staff, Guides, coaches, and volunteers;

(d) all Activities conducted by the Operator.

2.2 Specialised activities (e.g., advanced coaching, steep technical terrain, multi-day trips, races) may have additional mandatory equipment requirements.

3. Definitions

3.1 “PPE” means personal protective equipment.

3.2 “Helmet” means a certified mountain biking helmet meeting AS/NZS 2063 or equivalent.

3.3 “Protective Equipment” includes knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, eyewear, and body armour.

3.4 “E-bike” means a pedal-assist electric mountain bike supplied or approved by the Operator.

3.5 “Guardian” means a parent or legal guardian of a Minor.

4. Mandatory Safety Equipment

4.1 The following PPE is mandatory for all Participants in all Activities:

(a) certified mountain bike helmet (AS/NZS 2063 or equivalent);

(b) enclosed footwear suitable for riding;

(c) appropriately sized, functional mountain bike;

(d) functioning front and rear brakes;

(e) sufficient hydration (minimum 1L per hour of expected activity unless otherwise specified).

4.2 Participants must arrive with all required PPE unless the Operator provides it.

4.3 The Operator may deny participation if mandatory PPE is missing, damaged, or inappropriate.

5. Additional Mandatory PPE for Specific Activities

5.1 Advanced coaching, technical terrain, or higher-risk Activities may require:

(a) knee pads;

(b) elbow pads;

(c) full-finger gloves;

(d) eyewear (clear or tinted);

(e) body armour for torso and spine protection;

(f) full-face helmet (as specified)

5.2 Races and timed events may require:

(a) full-face helmet;

(b) knee pads;

(c) long-finger gloves;

(d) hydration pack;

(e) emergency whistle or safety tag;

(f) AusCycling-compliant PPE requirements.

6. Mandatory Equipment for Minors

6.1 Minors may be required to wear additional PPE including:

(a) knee pads;

(b) elbow pads;

(c) full-finger gloves;

(d) eyewear;

(e) high-visibility clothing.

6.2 Guardians must ensure the Minor’s equipment:

(a) fits correctly;

(b) is in safe working order;

(c) meets minimum safety standards.

7. Recommended Safety Equipment

7.1 The Operator recommends:

(a) hydration pack or water bottle cage;

(b) multi-tool, pump, and spare tube;

(c) sunscreen and insect repellent;

(d) protective eyewear;

(e) riding apparel appropriate for weather conditions;

(f) thermal or rain layers;

(g) first aid essentials.

7.2 For e-bike riders, recommended additional items include:

(a) spare battery (where permitted);

(b) charger;

(c) range monitoring tools.

8. Equipment Standards & Maintenance

8.1 All Participant-supplied bikes must meet the following minimum standards:

(a) functional brakes;

(b) structurally sound frame and wheels;

(c) tyres with adequate tread;

(d) correctly adjusted suspension;

(e) safe and functioning drivetrain;

(f) no major mechanical defects.

8.2 The Operator may inspect Participant bikes and deny participation if:

(a) the bike is unsafe;

(b) repairs are required;

(c) components do not meet activity requirements.

9. Operator-Supplied Equipment

9.1 Where Equipment is supplied by the Operator:

(a) it will be provided in safe, serviceable condition;

(b) Participants must inspect before use;

(c) any damage must be reported immediately;

(d) usage is subject to the Equipment Hire, Security Deposit & Damage Liability Policy.

9.2 Participants must not modify or tamper with Operator-supplied Equipment.

10. Non-Compliance

10.1 Participants who fail to comply with this Policy may:

(a) be refused participation;

(b) be removed from the Activity;

(c) forfeit all payments and refunds;

(d) be liable for damage caused by inadequate equipment.

10.2 For Minors, consequences apply to the Guardian.

11. Environmental & Weather Considerations

11.1 Additional PPE may be required based on:

(a) heat or sun exposure;

(b) cold, wind, or rain;

(c) high-risk terrain;

(d) wildlife hazards;

(e) visibility conditions.

11.2 Guides may require Participants to carry additional equipment for:

(a) safety;

(b) emergency response;

(c) hydration;

(d) communications.

12. Jurisdiction

12.1 This Policy is governed by the laws of Queensland.

12.2 Local laws apply in other jurisdictions where Activities occur.

13. Acceptance Statement

“By participating in activities delivered by MTB Detour Pty Ltd (ACN 693 200 289), I confirm that I have read, understood, and agree to comply with the Safety Equipment Policy and will carry and use all mandatory equipment as required.”
